I came up through the trade — twelve years of field and shop work before I certified as an inspector. Marine fabrication under Lloyd's survey, pressure vessels in an ASME-stamped shop, municipal microtunnels, data centres, high-rise gas and HVAC, and process piping to B31.3 Category M.
What I brought with me was a career in operations. Before I held a ticket I ran business units, built training programs, and carried a P&L in a regulated industry.
Today I teach welding apprentices full time at UA Local 46, hold three Ontario Certificates of Qualification and inspection certification under both the CWB and AWS, and serve on standards committees across CSA, AWS, and ANSI.
That combination is the point. A training program is a technical problem and a business one, and I can work on both.
